If July on the North Shore belongs to fireworks and the first wave of Ravinia crowds, August belongs to the handoff. One village finishes its festival Sunday night and the next village opens its tents Friday afternoon. The calendar reads less like a lull before Labor Day and more like a relay, with Wilmette, Winnetka, Highwood, Highland Park, Evanston, and Skokie each taking a leg. Here is how the month lines up if you already live here and want to plan your Saturdays without scrolling through five different village websites.
Downtown Wilmette hosts the Wilmette Art Fair on August 1 and 2, with streets converted into open-air galleries, live demos, and painting classes. It's a short walk from the Wilmette French Market at 722 Green Bay Road, which runs Saturdays with produce, baked goods, and seasonal vendors. If you time it right, you can hit both in a morning.
Ravinia's schedule the same week is quieter than late August but worth a look. The Danish String Quartet plays on August 5, part of the festival's run through August 31 in Highland Park. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic. The lawn at Ravinia is still the cheapest way to hear world-class chamber music within a 20-minute drive of most North Shore addresses.
The first Friday of the month falls on August 7, which means the Hubbard Woods shopping district in Winnetka opens its doors for an evening of style, art, and sidewalk activity. It's the kind of event that rewards residents who already know which storefronts to duck into. The North Shore Art League, headquartered at 620 Lincoln Avenue in the Community House, keeps its Winnetka gallery active through the month with an exhibit titled "Observation into Imagination" by member Alice Rebechini running through August 24.
Then comes the sharp turn. On August 12, Highwood hosts Garlic Fest. It's a mid-week single-day event, which is unusual for the summer festival circuit and part of what makes Highwood's food calendar distinctive. If you have not been to Everts Park on a festival evening, this is a good introduction to a village that treats its restaurant scene as civic infrastructure.
Held on Saturdays from spring through fall, the Wilmette French Market draws a lively crowd with its ever-changing mix of farm-fresh produce, gourmet provisions, artisanal baked goods, seasonal offerings and unique finds from local vendors.
The weekly anchors matter as much as the festivals. Alongside the French Market in Wilmette, the Winnetka farmers market runs Saturdays through October 31, rain or shine. And Wilmette's Sound of Summer concert series continues at Village Hall Green, 1200 Wilmette Avenue, and other village locations through September 27, with the format built around lawn chairs and takeout from Wilmette restaurants.
August 16 and 17 belong to the Evanston Art & Big Fork Festival in downtown Evanston. The fair features 150 juried artists, alongside food, drink, and, per the promotional material, on-demand custom poems. It's the largest juried show on the North Shore's August calendar and worth a Saturday morning if you have not been.
Behind the scenes, some of these events are made possible by long-running local organizations. The North Shore Art League has been running programs in Winnetka for more than a century and coordinates several of the smaller pop-up exhibits scattered across village storefronts in August, including a show at Central Station Coffee & Tea in Wilmette running the full month.
Meanwhile, Ravinia's mid-month programming continues to fill weeknights. It's easy to forget, once school-year routines return, how many Tuesdays and Wednesdays the festival covers. If your household treats the lawn as a summer regular, mid-August is often less crowded than the first or last weekend of the month.
Skokie's Backlot Bash runs August 22 through August 24 in downtown Skokie, three days of carnival rides, tribute acts, and, per the official listing, pancakes with mimosas. It's the most family-forward of the late-August festivals, and it draws crowds from the western edge of the North Shore that don't always make it up to Highland Park or Wilmette for the smaller events.
This is also the weekend when Ravinia's biggest names begin to arrive. The festival's Highland Park schedule builds toward its last major headliners the following weekend, so if you want to hear the marquee acts of the summer, plan your ticket purchase now rather than the week of.
August 29 is the busiest single day of the month on the North Shore. Three events overlap:
August 30 keeps the pace up with Miranda Lambert at Ravinia. If your Sunday routine involves driving north for a concert, this is the weekend to give yourself extra time on Green Bay Road. Traffic between Wilmette and Highland Park will not be normal.
For residents who like a slower closing weekend, the Schmidt-Burnham Log House in Winnetka, the oldest log structure in Cook County, remains open through November 20 with limited public hours. It's the kind of stop that most North Shore residents drive past for years before ever walking through.

If you build the month around these four, the individual festivals become bonus programming rather than obligations. That is the trick most long-time residents figure out by their third or fourth summer here. You don't chase every event. You pick the weekend that fits your household and let the standing anchors carry the rest of the month.
The August calendar is a good reminder of why the villages between Evanston and Highwood function as one connected community even though each has its own government, school district, and downtown grid. The Wilmette Block Party depends on the Wilmette/Kenilworth Chamber. Ravinia draws its audience from every village north of the city line. First Friday in Hubbard Woods and the Evanston Art & Big Fork Festival share exhibitors. The North Shore Art League runs programs across at least three downtowns in a single month.
Residents who moved here from other suburbs often notice this first. The North Shore is not a single downtown with a single event calendar. It's a coordinated set of downtowns, each of which takes its turn hosting the region during a specific weekend. August is where that coordination is most visible, because the density of programming forces the villages to hand off to each other on schedule.
If you have friends visiting from out of town this month, the Wilmette Art Fair, Ravinia's late-August lineup, and the Block Party on August 29 are the three easiest introductions to how the North Shore actually works as a place.
